Tour Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS)

What is the best time to go on a tour?

Each Smile Kitesurf tour is scheduled around historically reliable wind conditions:

  • West Coast of Australia: November – March (summer)

  • North Queensland (Bowen, Whitsundays & Mackay): April – November (winter)

Can I get lessons, hire gear, or pay for boat support without a tour?

We run lessons in Mackay & Bowen for tour participants. For refresher lessons before your trip, we’ll help ensure you have the skills and confidence required.

Due to our small team of dedicated instructors, servicing non-tour participants is limited. Contact us, and we’ll see what we can work out!

Do I need to bring my own gear?

We aim to help you progress at your own pace, so having the right equipment for your style, size, and goals is essential.

  • Bring your own gear if it’s in good condition.

  • Need new gear? Contact us for guidance — we can help you select what suits your style and goals.

  • Smile & Kite Travel Packages can be delivered to your door or waiting for you at your tour location.

Equipment Hire:

  • Must be booked in advance.

  • A credit card is held on file for security.

  • Wear & tear is expected, but damages or loss may incur charges.

  • Equipment must be returned within 7 days of your return.

  • Only available within Australia; international participants can collect on arrival.

What is the cost of tours?

Tour prices vary by location, duration, and included activities. Check each tour’s information page for details.
Flights to the tour location are not included.

Can I come early or stay later?

Yes! Contact us in advance to organise accommodation, gear, and vehicles. Services outside the tour dates are limited unless arranged beforehand.

Are other activities included?

Yes! All tours include extra activities if wind conditions aren’t ideal:

  • Fishing, snorkeling, freediving, surfing, jet skis, treasure hunts, and more!

What should I bring & luggage limits?

  • Bring your most-used gear, not your entire kit.

  • Clothing, swimmers, hat, toiletries, water bottle.

  • Sun protection: long sleeves, rashies, jackets, leggings, and reef-safe sunscreen (link)

  • Luggage limits for small planes will be confirmed in your booking.

  • Packing tips are emailed before departure.

Can I get a refund if I’m injured before the tour?

We highly recommend travel insurance from the moment you pay your deposit or purchase flights. Our cancellation policy applies as stated in your booking confirmation.

Cancellation Policy

  • Please read our Smile Kitesurf Tour Terms & Conditions.

  • If cancelling, credits may be issued to use within 3 years.

  • You can try to find someone to take your place to minimise losses.

Can I bring a non-kiting partner or family?

Absolutely! Non-kiters will enjoy other activities at each location. Contact us for details.

Can I join solo?

Yes! Solo kiters are welcome. You can share accommodation with others or pay a single supplement. Tours are ability-based, not age-based.

What if there is no wind?

Tours are planned for optimal wind, but weather is unpredictable. We have plenty of alternative activities to keep you busy, including fishing, freediving, snorkeling, jet skis, and more.

Food & dietary requirements

We cater to dietary needs. During checkout, let us know your restrictions. For special ingredients, we recommend bringing them due to remote locations.
